Dreamfit: Paraplegic Motorbike Adaptions
We’ve talked about paraplegic motorbike adaptions before, and we know there are a lot of you petrol heads out there looking for ways to get back on two wheels again. There just doesnt seem to be any commercial solutions on the market, or even much information on DIY projects. We know people have adapted their bikes to be used by people in wheelchairs, we just haven’t had many details, so we were really impressed when we saw the website of an Australian engineering student.
Dreamfit is the brainchild of Darren Lomman who decided to make a viable solution for paraplegics to ride motorbikes again after meeting a paralysed ex-motorcross champion in a hospital carpark. After years of really impressive and detailed research, Darren has completed a prototype that is road legal and holds huge potential for mass production.
His modified CBR250RR motorcycle has some great features and modifications for a paraplegic rider:
- A hybrid electric/compressed air gear shifter on the handle bars.
- Front and rear brakes linked to a single brake lever.
- Foot plates, moulded knee supports and a moulded lumbar support for riders with a higher level of spinal injury.
- Moulded seating and support cups for feet.
- Pneumatic ’landing gear’ wheels to stop the bike from rolling over at stand still.
- Electronic sensors to automatically deploy or retract the landing gear wheels depending on speed.
- A safety monitoring system which detects failure of the pneumatic system and provides a manual override and chain powered back-up system.
