BloKart - Wind Powered Wheelchair Awesomeness
Tue, Apr 22, 2008 -
Blokart is the brainchild of New Zealand based Paul Beckett, who pretty much invented a whole new sport when he came up with the ridiculously simple yet awesome design for the Blokart and brought it to production back in 2001.
A simple three-wheeled kart, with the front wheel steered via hand control, and a sail attached much like a windsurf or land-yacht. The blokart wasn’t specifically designed for people with disabilities but it’s become a great new sport for wheelchair users in recent years.

The huge success and popularity of the blokart means that clubs and schools have sprung up all over the world, with all offering blokarts for hire and sale. That means that there’s finally a sport that able-bodied and wheelchair users can both take part in, using exactly the same equipment without any modifications or adaptions. Sweet. We are so going to kick their able-bodied asses.
The explosion in blokart popularity over the last couple of years is probably due in large part to how completely awesome the sport is. Take yourself to any flat-ish area of land that gets a little bit of wind, jump in a blokart and race around as much as you want until you brain explodes from too much fun. Simple.
It’s also reasonably accessible financially, with blokarts available to hire for low prices and the base model available to buy for around US$2500.
Proving that blokart is not only great for people in wheelchairs, but is also able to go on slightly more adventurous outing than a day trip to the beach, in 2007 a paraplegic piloted his blokart across the Gobi desert. Nicolas Massatt from France took part in the first Raid Challenge, an 8 day, 2000km race across the Mongolian interior by 10 blokart pilots.
As if the blokart wasn’t awesome enough already, it can be fitted with ice sliders instead of wheels in the winter so you can rock out on frozen lakes, and comes in one person or two person sizes.
We first saw the blokart at last years No Barriers Mountain Festival in California but didnt get a chance to take one out for a spin, which made us a little cranky, we still haven’t had a chance to play on one of these but the blokart has just gone straight to the top of our wish list.
