DIY wheelchair from spare bike parts for Africa

We’ve already talked about some of the charity initiatives that are helping get wheelchairs to developing nations so that disabled people can actually get mobile (read about the Whirlwind International Wheelchair Charity), but this latest design from Nottingham University in the UK has really impressed us.

Made almost completely from spare bike parts, and even some old pieces of wood, the wheelchair is designed to try and conquer the two main hurdles for mobility in Africa and other developing nations; rough terrain and cost.

The tricycle type design, with it’s main wheels at the front is almost a poor mans Trekinetic and looks extremely capable at tackling rough terrain. We’re guessing that one of these things will come in at less than 2% of the cost for any of the all terrain wheelchairs currently sold by chair makers, and actually looks way more robust and durable.

OK so maybe it still needs a little bit of work, but as a design, and a charitable initiative, this thing rocks.

The wheelchair actually looks like a lot of fun, it’s obvious the design students cant get enough of it. Maybe we can get the time we spend splashing through mud and puddles to count towards an engineering degree too.

No other information on when the team hope to start getting units out to Africa, but it’s obvious from the YouTube comments that it’s still very much in development. We’re trying to get in touch with the University to find out more and we’ll let you guys know as soon as we do.
