Woodstar - ATV wheelchairs with head control
Fri, Feb 15, 2008 -
So remember back when we said the Superfourin was the world’s most badass all-terrain ATV/Wheelchair, yeah, turns out we were wrong about that. Dont get us wrong, the Superfourin is amazing, and once the German firm that makes them takes up our suggestion to fit them with lasers we will totally be buying 10 and taking over the world.
But the Superfourin hasn’t made it to production yet, and Woodstar are making what seems to be the most amazing ATV for wheelchair users ever. A big claim, but with individual modifications available tailored to your level of injury, and vehicles that wouldnt be out of place in the next mission to the moon’s surface, Woodstar are leading the way.
Made in Norway and designed by a C5 quadriplegic, these things are truly badass. Quite apart from the rugged design and off-road capabilities, the Woodstar series of ATVs really makes the outdoors accessible to anyone in a wheelchair, no matter the height of their injury.
Specially molded arm rests and hand grips ensure that those with limited arm power can easily control the machines, which are road legal (at least in the EU, no idea if they are in the USA) and capable of speeds up to 60mph.. For higher level quads a head steer system is available too. Tilting your head to the side steers in that direction, acceleration and braking can be controlled by a sip/puff straw, and other controls such as ignition and lighting systems are controlled by the tongue.
This isnt a concept vehicle, this thing is successfully being used by people right now, truly bringing area’s of the world back into the realm of accessibility for people with severe paralysis. Check out the head controls set up to allow a C3 to steer and control everything with his head.
We seriously drool over these machines.
Not content with the single seater ATV model, Woodstar can also hit you up with the seriously fun looking BugRacer 500i, modifying it to your needs, for those times you want to take an able-bodied friend out for a spin, and scare the bejeezus out of them. We know you like doing that.
That thing looks amazing, room on the back for your chair, passenger seat for beer/girlfriend, and easily adapted for hand controls, sweet.
