We need to invade Germany again, seriously. It's obvious that they are planning to overtake the world via advanced engineering and a few battalions of wheelchair warriors carried across the battlefield by all-terrain, electric hybrid wheelchairs armed with lasers.
The British Columbia Mobility Opportunities Society (BCMOS) is a non-profit organisation that aims to allow people with significant physical disabilities the chance to take part in hiking and over night camping. Based in Vancouver BC, Canada BCMOS makes use of the TrailRider all terrain wheelchair, which allows people with severe disabilities and paralysis to get into the wilderness.
We've talked about paraplegic motorbike adaptions before, and we know there are a lot of you petrol heads out there looking for ways to get back on two wheels again. There just doesnt seem to be any commercial solutions on the market, or even much information on DIY projects. We know people have adapted their bikes to be used by people in wheelchairs, we just haven't had many details, so we were really impressed when we saw the website of an Australian engineering student.
You can strap your wheelchair to the rear cargo bay and tear up the trails in hardcore fashion with 800cc's of power and a top speed of 55 mph. The RZR's rear-mounted engine gives a low center of gravity for better handling, and the roll cage gives better protection than most ATV's out there
For those of you who ached for getting back to nature when we posted about the Eureka wheelchair accessible tent but wanted to sleep in a bit more comfort, your time has come. The 2008 Airstream Basecamp Trailer (from $26,000) is the oh so shiny answer to your ever present struggle between rugged outdoors adventures and the need [...]
A laser guided robot wheelchair that automatically docks with the user's vehicle and loads itself into the trunk has been developed by US company Freedom Sciences. The rather catchy named ATRS (Automated Transport and Retrieval System), uses the same laser guiding technology used by NASA when docking with the International Space Station. Sweet.
Using the new system, the user opens the door of their van and presses a button to lower the front seat so they can climb in. A remote control is then used to drive the chair round to the back of the van.
Touting a range of up to 200km and a top speed of 15KPH, the SuperFour is a hybrid electric wheelchair made for tackling off-road terrain with a slope angle of up to 22 degrees. The amount of information on this thing is ridiculously slim, considering how many people will be interested in something like this. We have been able to work out that it is not simply 4 wheel drive, but also comes with 4 wheel steering, which seems pretty cool in itself.
A simple three-wheeled kart, with the front wheel steered via hand control, and a sail attached much like a windsurf or land-yacht. The blokart wasn't specifically designed for people with disabilities but it's become a great new sport for wheelchair users in recent years.
If the Martin Conquest MotorTrike doesn't do it for you, and you still want to get back on the road in something other than a car then how about getting on your bike. There is no doubt that a significant number of people suffering SCI injuries got hurt in motorbike accidents, yet the enjoyment of hitting the road on two wheels is still a huge draw form people in wheelchairs.
One for the petrol-heads. The Martin Conquest is a 1130cc, 83bhp motorbike tricycle with a rear ramp to allow a wheelchair user to mount up and take to the open road while still in their wheelchair. No word on if it has a stereo system so you can blare out 'Born To Be Wild' while cruising country lanes though.
